Ryder and the Lost Star Badge

Kids stories

On the wide prairie, Ryder the cowboy loses his shiny star badge. With Horse, a curious Time Traveler, and a calm Map Maker, he follows a simple map—until a sneaky Bandit grabs the star. Can Ryder get it back and still be kind?
Ryder and the Lost Star Badge

Ryder the cowboy walks on the wide prairie. The grass sways. The sky is big and blue.

“Howdy,” says Ryder. He is kind and brave. He is small, but he stands tall.

Horse trots up. Horse is gentle and a little silly. Horse snorts: “Pff! Pff!”

Ryder pats Horse. “Good buddy.”

A funny gust of wind swirls. Pop! A person steps out, like a jump.

“I am the Time Traveler,” says the person. Their coat is shiny. Their eyes look curious. “I go tick-tock, here and there.”

Ryder blinks. “Whoa.”

Another person is sitting by a rock, drawing. “I am the Map Maker,” they say. They are calm and smart. They make neat lines. “I draw where things are.”

Ryder smiles. “Can you draw the prairie?”

Map Maker nods. “Yes. But… something is missing.”

Ryder feels his belt. His little gold star badge is gone.

“My badge!” Ryder gasps. “I lost it.”

Horse whinnies. “Neeigh!” like, oh no.

Time Traveler points. “We can find it. Let us look.”

Map Maker draws a circle. “We start here. Then we go to the tall grass. Then the pond. Then the old fence.”

They walk. Step-step. Clip-clop.

In the tall grass, something rustles. A Bandit pops up. He wears a dark hat and a grin.

“Hee-hee,” says Bandit. “I found a shiny star!”

Ryder takes a slow breath. He is brave, but he is also polite.

“Bandit,” says Ryder, “that is my badge. Please.”

Bandit hugs it. “Mine now!”

Horse stomps. “Thump!”

Map Maker whispers, “We need a plan.”

Time Traveler taps a watch. “Tick… tock… I can make one tiny rewind. Just a tiny one.”

Ryder nods. “Okay. Tiny.”

They try to get close. Bandit runs to the pond. Splash! He slips on mud.

“Whoa!” Bandit yelps.

The badge flies up—glint!—and lands on a cactus.

“Ouch!” says Bandit, rubbing his bottom.

Ryder walks gently to the cactus. “Careful, careful.” He uses his hat like a scoop. He lifts the badge without getting poked.

“I got it!” Ryder cheers.

Bandit looks sad. His eyes get watery.

Ryder tilts his head. “Do you want something shiny too?”

Bandit sniffs. “I… like stars.”

Map Maker smiles. “We can make one.”

Map Maker draws a new map with a big star on it. Time Traveler pulls a little pouch. “From another time,” they say. Out comes a roll of silver stickers.

Horse goes “Pff!” and nudges them closer.

Ryder sticks a silver star on Bandit’s hat. “Here. A hat star.”

Bandit touches it. “For me?”

“For you,” says Ryder.

Bandit grins. “Thanks. I will not take things now.”

They all walk back. The prairie feels warm. Birds sing.

Map Maker gives Ryder a new gift: a tiny paper map with a red X.

“What’s that?” Ryder asks.

“A treasure spot,” says Map Maker. “For you.”

They dig with their hands by the old fence. Soft dirt. Pat-pat.

Clink! A small tin pops out.

Inside are bright buttons and a mini bell that rings, “Ding!”

Ryder laughs. “Treasure!”

He pins his gold badge back on. He jingles the bell.

Horse prances. Time Traveler claps. Map Maker beams.

Ryder says, “On the prairie, we help. We share. And we find lost things.”

The sun smiles down as they head home, with a badge, a bell, and new friends.
