Miss Sophia and the Missing Ballet Shoe

Miss Sophia was a ballerina. She lived near the Enchanted Forest. She was gentle and brave. She loved to tip-toe and twirl.

One morning, she put on her shiny shoe. Then she looked. Her other shoe was gone.

“Oh no,” said Miss Sophia. “My ballet shoe!”

Doll was with her. Doll was small and smart. Doll had button eyes and a big, kind smile.

Doll patted Miss Sophia’s hand. “We can find it,” Doll said.

So they went into the Enchanted Forest.

The trees were tall. The leaves whispered. Little lights blinked like tiny stars.

Miss Sophia stepped softly. “Tip… toe… tip… toe,” she said.

Doll bounced. “I will look low,” Doll said. “You look high!”

They checked under a fern. They checked behind a mushroom. They checked inside a hollow log.

“Not here,” said Miss Sophia.

A flutter of mist swirled in front of them. The mist made a shiny shape, like a shoe.

“Oh!” Miss Sophia reached.

But it was only a trick.

Out popped Illusionist. He wore a tall hat. His eyes were quick.

“Ta-da!” said Illusionist. “I can make anything look like anything!”

Miss Sophia felt a little scared. Her tummy went tight.

Doll stood tall. “No tricks,” Doll said. “We need the real shoe.”

Illusionist smiled. “Find it if you can,” he said. He waved his hands.

Now the forest path looked like three paths. Left, right, and middle.

Miss Sophia took a slow breath. “I can be brave,” she whispered.

She held Doll close. “Let’s listen,” she said.

They got very quiet.

From far away came a tiny sound: tap… tap… tap.

Miss Sophia’s eyes widened. “That sounds like a hard shoe on stone!”

They followed the sound. Tip-toe, tip-toe.

They came to a clear pond. The water was still. On a flat rock sat her missing ballet shoe.

But Illusionist made the pond look deep and scary.

Doll leaned near the water. “Look,” Doll said softly. “The pond is only a little pond. I can see the pebbles.”

Miss Sophia nodded. “Thank you,” she said.

She did a tiny ballerina bow. Then she made a careful leap to the rock.

“Hop!”

She grabbed the shoe. It was real. It was warm from the sun.

Illusionist gasped. “You found it!”

Miss Sophia smiled. “I listened. And I had help.”

Illusionist’s shoulders dropped. He looked a bit lonely.

Doll waved. “You can do a kind trick,” Doll said.

Illusionist blinked. “A kind trick?”

“Yes,” said Miss Sophia. “Make a gift, not a scare.”

Illusionist thought, then waved his hands again.

Poof!

A pink ribbon appeared. Then another. Then a little sparkly box.

“For you,” said Illusionist. “A real prize. No pretend.”

Inside the box was a tiny golden star pin.

Miss Sophia clapped. “Oh! For my dance dress!”

Doll giggled. “Shiny!”

Miss Sophia put on both shoes. She pinned the star to her ribbon.

In the Enchanted Forest, she danced. One twirl. Two twirls.

Illusionist watched and smiled. “That is the best magic,” he said.

Doll and Miss Sophia went home with the shoe, the ribbon, and the golden star. Miss Sophia felt brave, and her feet felt ready to dance.
