Lucas Valentino and the Pearl Beacon

Kids stories

When the Pearl Beacon goes dark in Atlantis, brave little dinosaur Lucas Valentino helps an imaginary animal, a kind alien diplomat, and even a lonely sorcerer bring back the light.
Lucas Valentino and the Pearl Beacon

Lucas Valentino was a little dinosaur with a long green tail and a bright yellow backpack. He lived in Atlantis, under the blue, blue sea. Atlantis had tall shell towers, sleepy fish, and bubbles that went pop, pop, pop.

Lucas was small, but he was brave. He liked to help. Every morning, he said, “Hello, sea!” Then he waved to the coral, the crabs, and the tiny silver fish.

One day, the sea became very dim.

The big Pearl Beacon was not shining.

“Oh no,” said Lucas. “The Pearl Beacon lights our way home.”

A round little creature hopped out from behind a pink coral bush. It had bunny ears, four soft blue paws, and a tail like a fluffy cloud.

“I am Mip!” it said. “I am an imaginary animal. I can be anything I imagine.”

Mip imagined a hat. Poof! A hat appeared.

Mip imagined flippers. Poof! Two flippers appeared.

Lucas giggled. “Can you help me find the Beacon’s pearl?”

“Yes, yes, yes!” said Mip. “But I am a little scared of dark caves.”

“You can hold my tail,” said Lucas kindly.

Just then, a shiny bubble ship floated down from above. Inside was Alien Diplomat Zuri. Zuri was purple, polite, and very tall. Zuri wore a silver coat with six tiny buttons.

“Greetings, friends,” said Zuri. “I come in peace. I heard your beacon is dark. Without its light, my bubble ship cannot find the safe path through Atlantis.”

“We will help,” said Lucas.

Zuri gave a small bow. “Thank you, brave dinosaur.”

The three friends followed a trail of little golden bubbles. The bubbles went past the Shell School. They went around the Singing Fountain. They went into a dark, dark cave.

Mip squeezed Lucas’s tail.

“It is okay,” Lucas whispered. “We go slow.”

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Then they saw a man in a pointy blue hat. He was Sorcerer Brum. He stood beside the Pearl Beacon’s missing pearl.

“I found this pearl,” grumbled Brum. “It is warm and bright. I wanted it all for my lonely cave.”

Lucas did not stomp. He did not roar. He took one small step closer.

“Mr. Brum,” he said, “the pearl helps everyone. Fish need its light. Zuri needs its light. We need its light too.”

Brum looked at the dark cave. It was quiet. Very quiet.

“No one comes to see me,” he said in a small voice.

Mip had an idea. “We can visit!”

Poof! Mip imagined bright star stickers on the cave walls.

Zuri pressed a button on the silver coat. Ping! Tiny moon lamps floated around the cave.

Lucas opened his yellow backpack. Inside was a crunchy seaweed cookie.

“Would you like half?” asked Lucas.

Brum blinked. Then he smiled a little.

“A cookie?” he said. “For me?”

“For you,” said Lucas.

Brum shared the cookie. Crunch, crunch.

Then he lifted the pearl with both hands. “Let us put it back together.”

They swam to the top of the Shell Tower. The Pearl Beacon waited there, round and pale.

Lucas held the ladder steady. Mip imagined strong, stretchy arms. Zuri guided the pearl with a gentle blue beam. Brum carefully placed the pearl into its golden place.

Click.

First, there was one tiny sparkle.

Then, whoosh!

The Pearl Beacon shone bright, bright, bright.

Blue light danced over Atlantis. The shell towers glittered. The fish twirled. The crabs clapped their little claws.

“Hurrah!” called everyone.

Zuri’s bubble ship made happy music. “Beep-beep, hooray!”

Sorcerer Brum looked at the shining city. “May I live in a cave with star stickers and have friends visit?”

“Yes!” said Lucas. “Friends are welcome.”

The Mayor of Atlantis gave Lucas a treasure chest made of a giant pink shell. Inside were three special things: a golden compass, a pearl badge, and a tiny lamp that glowed whenever someone needed help.

“This is for Lucas Valentino,” said the Mayor. “Helper of Atlantis.”

Lucas wore the pearl badge proudly. Mip wore the golden compass as a funny hat. Zuri laughed. Even Brum laughed.

That night, Lucas went home through the glowing water. His new little lamp made a warm, soft light.

Lucas looked at Atlantis and smiled.

“Small helpers can make big light,” he said.

Pop, pop, pop, said the happy bubbles.

And under the blue, blue sea, Lucas Valentino slept with his pearl badge beside him and a new adventure waiting for tomorrow.
